Come and enjoy your lunch or dinner at Sher-e-Punjab

March 12, 2013

Sher-e-Punjab

There stands a restaurant on the Mumbai Road. The eatery is a big one named Sher-e-Punjab standing bang on the Highway. It is crowded every time we visit as people dine or have lunch there while they’re either on the way or return from a trip.

On entering the restaurant you will find a large spacious lawn where men sit for drinks. There is a family corner where families can enjoy Punjabi cuisine. Previously, only Punjabi cuisine was available but nowadays this restaurant has transformed into a multi-cuisine one serving all sorts of varieties ranging from Indian, Chinese and Moghlai. After the food is ordered you will get a welcome drink at no extra cost. People watch television while the children play in a shaded space. The excellent ambience inside the restaurant will relax you. The air-conditioned atmosphere would make you feel sleepy and but the welcome drink might energize your spirits.

The food is served hot and fresh from starters to the main course. The children too will not have any problem because the food is less spicy and served hot. The lip-smacking tadka is something which you can enjoy here with thin-papery rotis. This is a very popular main course dish for any Punjabi meal. The Chinese food is also delicious. Since I have not got the chance to taste their Moghlai dishes so cannot comment about them. The service is prompt and people will be around to give proper service. There are about one hundred seats arranged in different ways to make the eating orderly and systematic. The delicious taste of Punjabi and Chinese food will make you feel like visiting the restaurant often.

The only drawback of the restaurant is that they do not accept cards and have to pay cash. When the world believes in plastic money, Sher-e-Punjab with its excellent service should also change to accept cards along with cash.

The Indian restaurant at Saffron- The Park rocks!

March 12, 2013

Saffron-The parkIt had been a wish of mine since my college days to get inside The Park coffee shop and dine as well as to get the feel of the place, but I had to wait for the right moment. The moment when I got the salary from my first job .The day finally came, and trust me, holding my first earned money was a different feeling altogether. I decided to make the day a memorable one. I took my family out for dinner at this cool restaurant, Saffron – The Park.

The doorkeeper opened the door for us with a greeting ‘salaam saab’ (Indian way of saying hello). We entered. I was totally dazzled by the charm of its beauty. The lights reflecting all over gave the restaurant a magnificent look. It was indeed beautiful. Our table was already booked in advance. A lady in a black saree greeted us with a smile and guided us to our table. We sat comfortably on the cushion fitted chairs. Low power lights were hanging over the table making it look so pleasant. Beautiful wall hangings adorned the walls. We placed our order – the special for the day, a Rajhasthani thali.

While we waited for the food, I began to look around. There were so many happy faces around. People with their family and friends were enjoying their meals. The in-house band was playing a wonderful tune making the atmosphere serene. The food arrived. The waiter placed the shiny silver plates over the red tablecloth and served us the food with a smile. It’s needless to say that the meal was delicious. It was indeed a very pleasant experience dining over there with my family. And I can happily say now it was worth the wait!

Chelo Kebabs only at Peter Cat

March 12, 2013

peter cat

Peter Cat, a renowned restaurant in Kolkata is a foodie’s haven. You can dig into mouthwatering Continental and North Indian cuisines without emptying your pockets. Rush to this place if you are ravenously hungry, and when your taste buds crave for juicy meat, seasoned with herbs and spices! What makes Peter Cat famous among people is their succulent Chelo Kebabs, a sumptuous dish of buttered rice served hot with tomatoes, poached egg, mutton dumplings and mutton kebabs. Delicious and nutritious, this dish is enough to satiate your hunger anytime. I heard a lot about Peter Cat’s chelo kebabs from my relatives and friends. This is one reason why I decided to have my lunch there one fine afternoon.

On entering the restaurant, I was greeted with friendly and courteous waiters, dressed immaculately in their uniforms. There was no need to check their menu card because I was sitting at Peter Cat to taste their lip smacking Chelo Kebabs. After about 30 minutes of placing my order, the dish arrived, piping hot emitting a delicious aroma. The tantalizing smell of the spicy kebabs seasoned with the melted butter was just too appetizing. I didn’t wait a single minute and started gorging on the delicious chelo kebabs the moment they were laid on the table.

Their Chelo kebabs are reasonably priced and it’s a filling dish. Unless you are a gourmand, I’m sure you can’t eat anything else after you’ve finished a plateful of chelo kebabs. You can also complete your chelo kebabs with their tasty pineapple blossom or a pint of beer. The choice is yours! Apart from chelo kebabs, Peter Cat is also famous for their delectable sizzlers. You can try their chicken sizzler, a perfect combination of chicken breast, vegetables and egg, flavored with sauce. I found their service efficient and prompt. But, what attracted my attention was the cute cat’s head on the menu card and the funny quotes on their cocktail menu.

I’m sure I’ll come back here again, but this time with family and friends if I can get a table free that is!

Haute Cuisine at Mainland China

March 12, 2013

Mainland China

A restaurant that prides on its authentic Chinese cuisine is Mainland China. A part of Speciality Restaurants, Mainland China has four branches in Kolkata- at EM Bypass, Howrah, Ballygunge and Prince Anwar Shah Road (at South City Mall).  I tried their haute cuisine at their South City branch.  After watching Life of Pi at Fame, my sisters and I booked a table at Mainland China (people are always thronging here, especially on weekends and you have to book your table beforehand to avoid waiting for an hour or so). Unfortunately, that day we didn’t have a plan of eating at Mainland China, but luckily few people were dining there that day and we didn’t have to wait for our turn.

Once seated and greeted by their well mannered staff we placed our order. If you are in Kolkata, you can dig into succulent Chinese cuisine at Mainland China. For our starters, we had mouthwatering Keong’s Chicken with Green Chili and Spring Onion Hunan Prawns. The spicy flavors of these two dishes were enough to tantalize our taste buds and make us feel hungrier. Our main course consisted of Lobster In chilli oyster sauce, maoshi chicken, broken noodles with zucchini and golden garlic fried rice with iceberg lettuce. Finally, the waiter arrived with our mouthwatering dessert – Steamed coconut dumplings seasoned with honey butter sauce.  We didn’t get any opportunity to complain because the food and service at Mainland China was amazing.

If our appetites permitted we would have tasted each item here. I made up my mind to visit this place again to check out their succulent dishes, served hot and fresh to their customers. The ambience at Mainland China is also good, enhanced by its artful décor. You can also try their buffet served in the afternoon at specific rates. Trust me – once you taste Mainland China’s awesome Chinese cuisine you will want to come back to this place again and again!

Mocambo – Old school cooking at its best!

March 12, 2013

mocambo

Where do you think you can get authentic Chinese, lip-smacking Italian and mouthwatering north Indian cuisines at affordable rates? Well, just visit Mocambo at Park Street when your gut craves any of the above delicacies! As you walk in, you can see a cosmopolitan crowd inside Mocambo – tables occupied by foreigners, Anglo-Indians and of course, food loving Bengalis who are ready to taste delicious dishes. The restaurant has become even more popular all over India after being shown in the super-hit Bollywood movie Kahaani released last year. People rush to the place where Vidya Balan was seen sipping coffee in the movie.

Well, I got a chance to taste the food at Mocambo before Kahaani hit the silver screen. We were a group of four friends who were tired after a shopping spree at New Market, dropped in at Mocambo to taste their delicacies. Mocambo’s colorful and elegant décor impressed us. The dimly lit lamps hanging from the ceiling creates a warm, romantic and cozy ambience. We had ordered Devilled Crab, Angels on Horse Back, Chicken A La Kiev (my favourite!), Chicken Pavlograd, Spaghetti Bolognaise and Mixed Fried Rice. Our desserts included delicious Coupe Mocambo and Chocolate Delight.

Each item was just perfect! The chef knows what spices and herbs to add to make each dish delectable. We could not taste their north Indian dishes, though I have heard that Mocambo prepares some exotic north Indian cuisine.

Satisfied after having eaten perfectly flavored Italian and Chinese dishes, we have decided to eat here time and again. The money that you spend here is worth the food that you get to taste here. And what shall I say about their service! The reputation of any restaurant depends on the competence and efficiency of its staff. Mocambo employs competent and efficient waiters who responds to your needs promptly.

So, the next time if you are in or around Park Street do not forget to taste delicacies at Mocambo!

HONG KONG serves lip-smacking Chinese delicacies

March 12, 2013

hong kong

Hong Kong is one of the few decent food outlets where you can gorge on lip-smacking Chinese delicacies without burning a hole in your pocket. 188/9, Prince Anwar Shah Road should be your ultimate destination if you are famished and have limited money in your pocket.  It will not be wrong to call Hong Kong one of the oldest restaurants in Kolkata. I remember eating here as a child with my parents. Unfortunately, their standard has deteriorated, and what is retained is simply their delicious food. Their ambience is fin,e but what irks me now is their poor hygiene. Their plates, cutlery and bowls are not properly cleaned and some of the water glasses have developed cracks.

The waiters become confused if a lot of customers drop in. They often confuse your order with someone else’s order. But if you ignore these factors, then Hong Kong is a nice and affordable eatery.  Just a few months back, I dined here with my friends. We ordered Prawn wafers, Hong Kong Special hakka noodles, Chicken and Prawn Fried Rice, Fried chilli Chicken, Fried Spring Chicken and Szechuan Fish. Having stuffed ourselves with these delicacies, we ordered some delectable Pistachio ice cream, which melted in our mouths.

I think Hong Kong’s standard has deteriorated due to the lackadaisical attitude of the staff. It seems they no longer bother to augment the decor and refurbish the interior by adding some more tables and chairs for their guests. They don’t realize when plates and cutleries are not washed people will think twice before eating in that restaurant again. I used to be a regular customer. But, now their shabby ambience puts me off. Till date, they have maintained their food quality, but God knows how long they’ll be able to do so. Let’s wait and hope things turn out in the favour of all Kolkata foodies!

Red Chopstix

March 12, 2013

Red Chopstick

Well, the name suggests that the restaurant provides Chinese and continental dishes. It is true. I visited the restaurant last week with a couple of friends of mine. We all were in the mood for some adventure and decided to try our hands at something new. At that point, none of us were really hoping what to expect and honestly speaking, what followed was a shocker!

Let me start by speaking about the location of Chopstix. Chopstix is located just beside KPC Hospital which is close to Sulekha crossing at Jadavpur. KPC is a hospital which formerly treated tuberculosis patients only and later it was renovated to cater to different kinds of patients. Honestly, a continental restaurant sitting beside a hospital gives me the creeps! Wonder what the owners were thinking!

There is no parking space whatsoever. Chopstix is situated on the main road itself leaving almost no space to even park your bike. We had to take the trouble to park our car on the opposite side of the road, a place which is reserved for minibuses.

Now if you ask why we ventured into such a restaurant which had no parking space for visitors and the location was a letdown, I will like to point out to that fact stated earlier that we had our adventure face on that day. In spite of the above mentioned drawbacks, we planned to give it a shot.

The main gate of Chopstix is designed with Oriental chimes and lanterns, giving you an Asian feel as you enter. As I entered through the main gate, I was met by a flight of stairs which led us to the main dining area. The setting of the dining space was oriental in all aspects. There were Chinese wall hangings depicting dragons, Chinese lamp shades and lanterns. The tables were mainly set for four while a couple of tables at the corner were set to accommodate six diners. Wooden mats were placed on the tables and I was expecting food to be served in Chinese bowls. Sadly, that was not the case though. But I will talk about it later.

Moving on, I was completely shocked when a steward came forward and greeted us! Honestly, this was completely unexpected and a pleasant surprise for me. He greeted us and in the meantime, a waiter came forward and gave us face wipes. I ordered for baby corn soup for starters, followed by chicken Hakka noodles, schezuan chicken and green chicken chili for the mains. We decided to order the dessert while having dinner.

The food came on time and one must appreciate the promptness of service. The soup was good, though a bit more corn would not have been harmful. The mains were a complete letdown. The noodles were thick and not at all seasoned. Moreover, I could smell kerosene oil from the noodles! Speaks a lot about the condition of the kitchen, doesn’t it? Schezuan chicken is meant to be on the hotter side with a lot of spices, but Chopstix gave us “sweet” schezuan chicken. The green chilly chicken was the saving grace although the amount of garnishing on the plate was scanty. Major letdown: although the name is Chopstix, there were no chopsticks given to have food!!! Lame!

Now comes the climax. As we were busy having our dinner and chatting with one another, the steward came forward and asked us about the food. I told what we felt. His reply was that their food is great, nobody else ever complained and moreover, taste depended on perception. The moment I heard such a comment from the steward, I asked for the bill, paid it off and walked away, deciding never to come back again.

To sum up, creepy and unhygienic location, no parking space, unhygienic kitchen, bad customer service – many reasons for me to avoid Chopstix. Wonder what you will do?

Xrong Place

March 12, 2013

xrong place

Xrong place is a wine and dine lounge located at 25 Sarat Banerjee Road, Rash Behari Avenue, Kolkata. Though the space is small and may seem a bit crowded especially in the evenings and during any event, Xrong Place is a great spot to hang out with your friends during the weekend.

Xrong Place is comparatively new when compared to the many lounges and pubs scattered around the city. However, the ambience and the service is what make the difference. Some might say the booze is costly. Well, definitely it is and I do not argue about that. However, the overall experience plus the excellent food makes it worth the money spent.

I visited Xrong Place a few times, sometimes with my friends and sometimes alone. Yes, stag entry is allowed! And every time I went, I was amazed by the wonderful hospitality and service dished out by the staff.

The last time I visited Xrong Place was a couple of weeks back with a friend of mine. This was his first time at Xrong Place and after we left, he was amazed at the professionalism and the service. Xrong Place has a very casual seating arrangement with sofas well spaced by tables and chairs. The basement or the ground floor has sofas only while the top floor has both chairs and tables and also sofas. I love the Drums of Heaven chicken preparation there and this time there was no exception. So we ordered two beers, Drums of Heaven and Pan Fried Chilly Fish for starters. As usual, the beer was served chilled and the food was excellent. The place had live DJ music and we were blessed to have a DJ that day who actually knew to up the tempo and knew what he was playing.

After having a couple of beers, we planned to have whiskey. The liquor was served in clean and beautiful glasses and unlike in other pubs and bars, the cold drink was served in a separate glass jar! Classy, one must say! The waiters were not the usual robotic types and my friend was surprised to find the waiters to be so casual and friendly. They never seemed agitated and were more than happy to answer our questions. The DJ was happy to oblige to our requests and even joined us for a couple of drinks.

Overall, I enjoy myself to the fullest every time I visit Xrong Place. I will have to mention two occasions where I had a blast. The first one was the day India won the Cricket World Cup in 2011 and the other time was the New Year’s Eve in the same year. To me, it’s the best place to be at is your intention is to just chill!

Hatari

March 12, 2013

hatari

Hatari restaurant is a North Indian and Chinese restaurant located at 113/1B, Rash Behari Avenue, Kolkata. It is one of the landmarks in the prime shopping area called Gariahat. The restaurant is very spacious and the best part about the Hatari is the cool and calm ambience created by the amazing lighting work.

The menu at Hatari includes everything that is North Indian and Chinese. The restaurant takes pride about the fact that it is one of the few restaurants in Kolkata that serves pork, lamb and duck dishes at the same time.

I visited the restaurant with my parents on a busy Saturday evening. We had spent the whole day shopping for the upcoming Pujas and I was completely exhausted. I wanted to have dinner at a place which would be peaceful and at the same time provided quality food. This urge of mine led me and my family to Hatari. And believe me, I was not disappointed.

We immediately found a table for four. Once we were comfortable, we were approached by a very professional and friendly waiter. It was surprising that he did not start his conversation by asking us what we wanted to order. Instead, he greeted us very warmly and judging by our worn out looks, he said that whether we had a hectic day or not. This was a good feeling!

After some small talk, we placed our order. We had Cantonese and Chicken Asparagus soup along with a plate each of Chicken Satay and Crispy Fish for starters. For the mains, we ordered a plate of chili crab, chicken reshmi masala, Thai noodles and butter Nan. I also asked the waiter to serve cold drinks during the mains.

Like always, Hatari did not disappoint with any of the dishes. Whether it was the starters or the mains, the food was excellent. This is what I like about this place. No matter which time of the day you visit, the quality of the food and service will still be the same. I wonder how they manage to produce such excellent service every single day! And the best part about the whole dining experience is that it is not at all expensive.

To be honest, I have never found any other restaurant in Kolkata to be as consistent in terms of both food and service as Hatari. And I dine out a lot! And it is this consistency of that will make me visit Hatari again and again and again! My heartiest regards to the management of Hatari for putting up and maintaining a fine dining restaurant in the heart of the city.

Raul’s Restaurant

March 12, 2013

Raul's

Raul’s Bar and Restaurant is a small wine and dine place located just opposite Jatin Das Park Metro station. Raul’s is one of the oldest bars in the city and just like the charismatic Coffee House in College Street, holds a special place for the old and the young.

During its initial years, Raul’s was just like any other economy bar. However, with time, it has expanded amazingly and it now has an a/c and a non a/c floor and also a separate floor which has a family diner as well.

My association with Raul’s dates back to by college days when like any other college going teenager, I was living on my monthly allowance plus a few extra bucks which I earned by giving tuitions. The first time I visited Raul’s was during a small party arranged by one of my friends to celebrate his birthday.

Since then, I have been a regular at Raul’s. The best part about the place was that during my college days, they served beer and alcohol at the cheapest rates. Imagine, having a bottle of chilled beer for just Rs. 80 and a peg of 90 ml rum for just Rs. 25 was like hitting a jackpot during those days. However, the biggest attraction was the chicken dishes at Raul’s. I can definitely bet on the fact that no other bar or restaurant serves such delicious chili chicken as Raul’s.

Well times have changed and so has Raul’s. You no longer get hard drinks for 25 rupees nor beer for 80. However, the old charm of the place is still intact. Initially we criticized the fact that the management did not take proper care of the place. The walls were not painted, the sofas were the same as during my college days, etc. but very soon we realized the fact that it was pretty difficult to maintain the old charm and make the customers nostalgic every time they visit the bar. I definitely go nostalgic every time I visit the place. No matter the problem that we are dealing with in life, when my friends and I meet at Raul’s, we end up talking about our college days, our flings, our dare-devil attitudes – our “golden” days as a whole.
