Khandani Rajdhani Restaurant

March 11, 2013

khandani-rajdhani

If you love Gujarati as well as Rajasthani dishes, then you must visit any of the branches of Rajdhani Restaurant in Kolkata. I have visited one of its branches in Kolkata, the one at E.M. Bypass and was highly elated by the warm hospitality of the staffs there. The restaurant has been able to maintain the ancient and princely aroma of mouth-watering Rajasthani dishes. The foods are cooked in pure ghee. Rajdhani’s tastiest curries are prepared by using good quality pulses and gram flour. Dry fruits, cardamom, rose water and ginger forms the basis of almost every curry cooked and served by Khandani Rajdhani. Various types of Rajasthani savouries and snacks are served by Rajdhani with great care. I liked the Rajasthani dish “chane Jaisalmer ke” when I went with my friends to have lunch over there. The curry was well blended with spices like garam masala, cinnamon, asafoetida, black cardamoms and cumin seeds. Yogurt and black Bengal gram formed the main ingredients of the curry. The dish was garnished well with chopped chillies, coriander leaves and three to four tablespoons of ghee were sprinkled to have the real aroma of Rajasthani cuisine. A spoonful of the dish went into my mouth and I got lost, somewhere in Rajasthan. The ancient princely taste of Rajasthan quenched the thirst of my taste-buds and I went on eating and eating. “Dal baati”, “churma” and “missi roti” ended up in our plates but we still went on licking our fingers for the want of more!

Rajdhani’s hospitality is going to make you feel that you are no less than a king or a queen. The rates of dishes are reasonable. Servers over there are going to serve you promptly and they are always eager to help you out in every way possible for them. “Paneer ki sabzi” was also really great at Rajasthan. One of my friends did not like paneer at all, but after tasting one spoon of the recipe, she fell in real love with paneer and even promised that whenever she will feel to taste paneer, she will creep in to Rajdhani to taste the real Rajasthani flavour. Next time I will be skipping my breakfast and going to Rajdhani to enjoy some other real Rajasthani dishes.

Flavors of Sikkim only at The Blue Poppy

March 11, 2013

The Blue Poppy

After hearing a lot about The Blue Poppy, finally last week I landed at this restaurant, situated at 4/1, Sikkim House, Middleton Street, with two of my friends for a dinner. It is on the first floor of the building. As we opened the door and stepped into the restaurant, we received a greeting smile from the one of the restaurant staff. The ambience is very simple, no fancy decor, lighting or color but the place is very peaceful and pleasing. The seating arrangement is also not very appealing. We took a four-seater table in the middle row and placed our order quickly, which included one plate Chicken Momo (Steam), one Egg Chicken Rice, one Chicken Chow and one Lemon Chicken. One thing I noticed here is that they are very quick in serving orders. While chatting among ourselves after placing the order, I rolled my eyes all around and noticed that on every wall, there is a display of Sikkim art. The lighting arrangement also reflects a Chinese or Tibetan style.  The place seemed very appealing and nostalgic to me as I frequently visit North Bengal and Sikkim. I felt the same culture and ambience here.

As the food was served, I could smell exactly the same flavor as I get in Sikkim. The Momo’s were brilliant and I must say that one will rarely find such authentic Nepalese or Tibetan Momo’s elsewhere in Kolkata. Excellent! And with Momo’s, they also serve authentic Sikkim style hot and red chilli sauce (very common in Sikkim and Darjeeling). For a moment, I felt as if I was in Sikkim. The chow, rice and the chicken preparations were also delicious. No matter how simple the ambience of this place is, they are excellent in preparing authentic Chinese, Tibetan or Nepalese preparations. Also, the quantity of one plate is enough for two people. Overall, this food joint is just superb for all Chinese, Tibetan or Nepalese food lovers!

Hot & Happening Silver Chimney!!

March 11, 2013

silver chimney

Several Restaurants, Several Cuisines…. People often get confused what to choose and what not to!!

No doubt that sometimes we too become choosy about various outlets inside & outside Kolkata but yesterday was the best choice I and my friends made which I want to share amongst all.

Friends, it’s none other than Silver Chimney located at BF 97, Sector 1, Salt Lake, Kolkata. The nearest landmark to it is the Swimming Pool. After hovering around the same restaurants in Salt Lake I and my two friends decided to check this one. It’s a well known restaurant with 5 more outlets in Kolkata. Silver Chimney, Salt Lake met our expectations very well. The ambience inside the restaurant was cozy and comfortable for a small hangout or party with friends and family. It’s centrally air conditioned and has a huge space to accommodate 50 or more.

Usually, every time before placing our order we sit with our mobile to calculate the expense but surprisingly as we opened the menu card offered by the waiter we were shocked. Guess what?? The prices were affordable and we did not have to think much about our pockets…

Some of us were addicted to Chinese and some to Indian so we mixed and matched our orders.

Starters like Chicken Drums of Heaven and Baby Corn Masala with Chicken Coriander Soup was awesome.

Then we ordered for the main course:Butter Naan, Kadai Paneer,Mixed Fried Rice and Lemon Chicken. The special Attraction in our menu was Pineapple Raita which we never tasted in any restaurants. The quality and quantity of the food were both acceptable, and less spicy which was fair enough. The only drawback was that the food ordered came very late. It took 30 mins approximately for the food to be served on our table which made us really hungry. Nevertheless, we were happy. Try it soon with your friends and family – Home Delivery is also available even if you cannot make time from your hectic schedule to visit it personally.

RAJDHANI – ROYALLY RAJASTHAN

March 11, 2013

rajdhani

Thinking about a change in your menu? Planning to try a different cuisine this weekend? Bored of the same old hangout places? RAJDHANI is the answer to your questions. Rajdhani, situated at Banjara Hills, road number 3 in Hyderabad is truly august. Rajdhani, a vegetarian restaurant, has more to offer then you can actually think of. Rajasthan is a symbol of Indian culture, with its unique décor and folk music in the background, Rajdhani smells of Rajasthan. The ambience is perfect for a family hangout.

They welcome you with a glass of buttermilk (chaas). To beat the heat of Hyderabad, this is more relaxing then any mocktails or aerated drinks. If you visit Rajdhani, get ready for some special royal treatment! They help you wash your hands with warm water while you are seated, which is an ancient custom in India and is quite hygienic. They apply tikka to their guests, proving that they believe in ‘Athiti Devo Bhavo’.

Next comes your food. Rajdhani is famous for the Thali they offer. It is often called the Thali Place with more than 72 different rotating menus. They have exotic items on their list, which is a blend of cuisines of Rajasthan and Gujarat.  Be it Dal-baati or Farsan, Meethi-dal or Gatte ki sabji, Aam ki launji or simple Peas-pulao, every item has its own aroma and taste. Rajdhani has more to offer when it comes to your desserts. Soft Gulab-jamun or hot Jalebi, Chokha ni kheer or Gajar ka halwa, every single item is exclusive.

The name Rajdhani looks perfect to me. Rajdhani, means ‘the capital’, where you are treated like a king or queen. You are facilitated with an assorted menu from the land of Marwar. Cost effective with an uncommon menu, Rajdhani is unique in its own way. Rajdhani is a potpourri and scores a 9/10 on my food-o-meter.

For a slice of pizza heaven, just step into Pizza Corner

March 11, 2013

pizza corner

There are very few people in Kolkata who are still unaware of renowned names like Dominos and Pizza Hut. But there are many people who have never heard the name – Pizza Corner, because it is a new pizza outlet having only two outlets in Kolkata – one at Salt Lake and another at Ballygunge. The Saltlake branch is an old one, and just a year or two ago, it opened its second outlet at Bally High which is opposite Ice Skating Rink.

A perfect place to hang out with friends or family, this restaurant serves mouth watering pizzas with a variety of toppings. The Ballygunge outlet is very close to my place, and I have visited there twice. The first time I went there was for a birthday party celebrations of my best friend in September 2011 and we ordered Chicken Supreme, Super Combo and Jugalbandi (all Large) along with Choco Nut Brownies. Each of the items was superb to taste and more than enough for seven of us. We ordered one of these pizzas with extra cheese (I don’t exactly remember which one) and after having that, we all were licking our fingers, savoring the last drop of cheese before it was finished. The dessert was also too good and put a deserving end to our scrumptious dinner. The prices are quite reasonable, and as my friend possesses a Club Solitaire card, she enjoyed a handsome discount on the total bill as well.

I was very satisfied with my first experience, and so I decided to return here with my parents and brother to let them savor the authentic taste of pizzas at reasonable prices this year. I did not want to experiment, so I ordered the same choices like last time except for the Super Combo as we don’t prefer lamb, and my mom doesn’t have chicken, so Jugalbandi was ordered especially for her. Both were of Large variety and with extra cheese. Along with these two pizzas, we ordered one Zesty Mushroom and Tomato Pasta and one Smoked Grilled Chicken. We were very pleased and satisfied and had a lip smacking dinner.

Both the times, I had a pleasing experience. The ambience is also very good. I want to come back here once more, preferably during this Durga Puja’s, and this time I want to try the Baked Chicken n Cheese Pasta because I have heard from one of my friends that it is so delicious that once tasted, people come back just to have this dish again!

KFC – Reliable fast food

March 11, 2013

KFC

KFC at South City Mall (3rd floor) is an ideal food hub for all hungry buddies who come here to chomp on juicy chickens and gossip or share each others’ experiences.  Believe me you will not burn a hole in your pocket if you hit this place! All the eatables at KFC are reasonably priced. I often used to chill out at South City KFC with my buddies. It’s true that the seating arrangement is not too good, and sometimes you have to wait near a table till somebody finishes their meal and leaves. But, it’s the taste of the juicy chicken pieces that brings me to this place again and again.

You have to place your order at the counter and carry your food tray to your table. The employees are well mannered and polite. Though many of their staff members are physically challenged, they clearly understand your signs when you place your order. The most reasonably priced as well as popular food pack at KFC is their Zingkong Box (chicken or veg.). We often used to order Zingkong box because it is filling and appetizing. Each box contains a zinger burger, French fries, KFC chicken and a glass of Pepsi. Their chicken rizo is also awesome. Sometimes, I tried their crispy Chicken Popcorn. If you are not hungry but want to munch on some snacks while gossiping with friends, KFC’s Chicken Popcorn is just what you need! Their frappe or “krushers” are too good as well. Often, on hot summer days I went to KFC only to taste their “krushers’’ (a mixture of ice, milk, chocolate and chocolate chips) that melted in my mouth. What makes KFC popular among youngsters is their chicken bucket (dips bucket, hot and crisp and fiery grilled) which contains 12 to 20 juicy chicken pieces.

You just need to have Rs.500 in your pocket and you will never go hungry when you are at a KFC joint!

Tantalize your taste buds with authentic Chinese cuisine at Golden Bowl

March 11, 2013

Golden Bowl

Located at 19B, Naseerudin Road, Kolkata at Park Circus area, Golden Bowl is an authentic Chinese restaurant in the heart of the famous ‘Biriyani para’ of Kolkata. It is located near my place, and I often visit this gastronomic enclave, which has always satisfied my taste buds with its delicious Chinese flavors. Besides a family dinner once in a month here, I often place a take away order whenever there is any occasion at our place. Moreover, Golden Bowl has become a must-dine-in place for my building friends and me at least one day during the Durga Pujas, and this has been happening since our teenage years, as they serve scrumptious dishes at reasonable prices.

This restaurant is not a very spacious or big Chinese restaurant like many other restaurants located all across the city, but its calm and silent ambience with the warm hospitality of the staff is so appealing that anyone will enjoy dining here in a peaceful environment after a hectic day. All the tables are neatly set up in that small area so that no one will feel clumsy and congested.

Whenever I am here with my parents and brother, we generally start with Chicken Sweet Corn Soup and Vegetable Noodle Soup (because my mother doesn’t have chicken or mutton). So, she either opts for vegetarian preparations or fish preparations. Drums of Heaven, Prawn Ball Fried, Chicken 69 and Chicken Salad are some of the starters from which we make our choices every time. For the main course, I always prefer Szechwan preparations whether it is noodles or rice, because truly speaking I have been to many Chinese restaurants, some of which are very popular but the Szechwan preparations served here are just yum! The chicken preparations are lip smacking here and I have tried almost all their chicken preparations, and each one is totally different, especially their Sliced Chicken with Pineapple. As I don’t have fish, I can’t give a personal review about this category, but whenever I have been here either with my family or friends, I have always heard them saying that the fish preparations here are too good, and they often request me to taste a bit.

Last year during the Durga pujas, when I was there with my friends like every year, one from our group suggested trying something different and she placed an order for Chicken Hot & Sour Soup. This is the only item here which I won’t suggest to anyone – ever! After tasting this soup, I felt like it was nothing but the gravy of the Chili Chicken! Apart from this preparation, this restaurant has always pleased me and every visit has made me want to return here again and again.

Flame & Grill – One of the best deals in town!

March 11, 2013

flame & grill

A pint of Caprioshka with hot, soft and spicy kebabs is enough to make your day a good one! And, when you have this combination at Flame & Grill, South City Mall the experience is simple delightful! Situated on the third floor of South City Mall, Flame & Grill boasts of a conspicuous ambience and classy décor. What makes this restaurant cum pub different from any ordinary restaurant is its overpowering aroma of spices. Tall glass jars filled with fresh herbs and spices are used to decorate the shelves, giving a perfect visual appeal to all food lovers.

Flame & Grill offers a buffet at fixed rates. You have to book your table beforehand if you are planning to dine or enjoy your lunch here. With the welcoming aroma of spices and the delicious flavor of Afghani and Mughlai dishes, Flame & Grill is just too good for your taste buds! My weakness for kebabs brought me to this place last year. Of course, my old friends accompanied me (you cannot enjoy your meal until there is someone to share your experiences with). We had delicious cocktails with mutton, chicken, fish and prawn kebabs. The kebabs here are served on skewers, which are placed on a charcoal burner present at the centre of each table. Have as many kebabs as you can while chatting with friends or family!

Once we were done with our kebabs we moved on to the main course. A sumptuous spread of vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes were spread out on a long table. Naans, parathas, biryani, chole, paneer curry, chicken dishes, mutton dishes, fish and yummy desserts (chocolate brownies, custard, luscious fruits and ice creams) were spread out on the long table. We tasted each item. Each dish tasted awesome. Whether it was chicken, mutton or fish or any vegetarian dish, each item is carefully seasoned with rare herbs to stimulate your taste buds.

D-Oh! Boy, I love you…

March 11, 2013

D-oh! boy

I have tasted donuts at various cafes and dessert shops but what D-Oh! Boy has served me is just amazing. I am sure if D-Oh! Boy had not been there, Kolkata would have never seen or tasted such a wide variety of incredibly awesome donuts. D-Oh! Boy, a cozy little store at 25/1, Shakespeare Sarani, Kolkata is a wonderful place for me to enjoy a donut party with friends. The first time when I was there, I was just awe-struck to see so many kinds of donuts at their counter with different types of toppings and color. The only phrase that I utter was, “My God!”

I soon placed my order considering the beauty of each type of donuts. My order included White Chocolate with Raspberry, Hazelnut Whirlpool and Cheezilicious. My God! Each bite was too good. So soft, juicy and yummy! It smoothly melted inside the mouth leaving a warm creamy flavor for the taste buds. Though donuts have a hole at their center but these donuts at D-Oh! Boy never burn a hole in your pocket while giving a amazing treat to your tummy and mind. After this first visit, D-Oh! Boy has impressed me so much that I have become a frequent visitor at this place. Apart from these three types of donuts, Deep Dark Desire and Black Forest have also swayed me away a number of times.

Apart from these super soft delicious donuts, D-Oh! Boy is also expert in quenching my thirst with its refreshing beverages. Creamy Chocolate, Crunchy Kitkat and Oreo Time are some of my favorite options here. Sandwiches at D-Oh! Boy are well known as D-Oh! Wiches and each type of these veg sandwiches are also great combination to complement the sweet taste of the donuts. If you are there anytime, at least don’t miss the heavenly opportunity to taste the flavor and softness of their Deep Dark Desire and White Chocolate with Raspberry donuts combined with a Crunchy Kitkat shake if you can handle all that sweetness!

Walk into Chilli Pepper to satisfy your taste buds with lip smacking Chinese dishes at nominal price

March 11, 2013

Chilli Pepper

Chilli Pepper is a purely Chinese restaurant located at 104/1 Ustad Khan Avenue, Kolkata just a stone throw away from Park Circus Market. It is a very small restaurant which initially started as a road side Chinese counter. Gradually, it expanded and along with the take away counter (which is its original outlet), it opened an AC restaurant just on one side of the take away counter.

This is not a restaurant that can be compared with other top grade or medium grade restaurants, but still this new restaurant has gained huge popularity in the Park Circus area where there are already a large number of big names in the world of Mughlai and Chinese restaurants like Zeeshan, Arsalaan, Chinese Bowl and more. I think the main reason behind such popularity is the availability of quality food within nominal prices along with the friendly behavior of the staff.

I am sure you will be surprised to see the rate chart when you glance at it for the first time because the same thing happened to me. I remember the first day when I went there to place an order for take away. I could not believe my eyes when I saw the rate chart, and while going through the chart, I won’t lie, the first thought that came to mind was – how will be the quality of food be at such low rates?!? So, as an experiment, I placed an order for Mixed Noodles and Chilli Chicken for four in my family. But after tasting both the preparations, I have returned to this place so many times for more. The last time was probably a fortnight ago, when I had Ginger Capsicum Rice and Threaded Chicken and both were delectable. They always provide freshly prepared dishes, and you will also understand this, because if you make a late visit here (like after 9.30 PM or 10.00 PM) on weekdays, you will often end up hearing that many choices are unavailable as the stock of raw ingredients (like fish, chicken or prawn) has finished and you have to place your order from the limited choices that are left.

Besides dinner, often, I visit here (almost every week) to have a plate of Steamed Momo’s which are so scrumptious that you won’t feel like paying more for the same lip smacking taste at other renowned Momo centers. It is very close to my home so whenever I feel the urge to taste the flavors of Chilli Pepper I walk down. I have almost become a regular diner at this restaurant.

Décor is simple. The small restaurant is painted in bright romantic colors and decorated with soft illumination. All the tables are set very neatly and one can enjoy every service here that a big restaurant usually provides. The take away counter is always over crowded but the restaurant remains comparatively less populated except during special occasions, festivals and weekends. Chilli Pepper also provides home delivery in time and I have tried this service also and I don’t have any complaints about this service as well.
